Martin Parr's Pop and Kitsch Obsessions on Display in Milan
The Mudec Photo in Milan is hosting 'Short & Sweet', a major retrospective of British photographer Martin Parr, curated by the artist himself in collaboration with Magnum Photos and produced by 24 ORE Cultura and the Municipality of Milan. The exhibition features over 60 photographs spanning from the 1970s to today, organized into nine thematic sections. It includes the early black-and-white series 'Bad Weather' (1982), capturing life under rain, fog, and wind in England and Ireland, and 'The Non Conformist' (1975-1980), documenting social changes in West Yorkshire's suburbs. Parr's first color reportage, 'The Last Resort' (1982-85), depicts working-class leisure in New Brighton. 'Small World' (1989-2008) critiques mass tourism and cultural clichés, while 'Everybody Dance Now' (1986-2018) explores dance as a democratic form across traditional and contemporary events. The centerpiece is 'Common Sense', a site-specific installation of over 200 A3 color prints, recreating the acclaimed 1999 exhibition. The show also includes an unpublished video interview with photography historian Roberta Valtorta, featured in the exhibition catalog published by 24 ORE Cultura.
