Martin Herbert's Top Ten Art Shows for December 2014

Martin Herbert selects ten must-see exhibitions globally for December 2014. Caragh Thuring at Chisenhale, London, explores substitution and slowness in painting. R.H. Quaytman at Gladstone, New York, continues her Chapter series, filtering autobiographical and contingent elements. Xu Bing's survey at LACMA, Los Angeles, includes Book from the Sky and The Character of Characters. Huang Yong Ping at MAXXI, Rome, features Bâton Serpent, merging Eastern and Western aesthetics. Artes Mundi in Cardiff presents nine shortlisted artists including Omer Fast and Theaster Gates, with a £40,000 prize. Tunga at Pilar Corrias, London, shows sculptures and drawings from his La Voie Humide series. Pietro Roccasalva at Zeno X, Antwerp, presents The Queen of Gaps, mixing painting, film, and neon. Brent Wadden at Peres Projects, Berlin, weaves abstract geometric canvases from secondhand yarn. Garage Museum in Moscow hosts Art Experiment: 32 Questions from John Cage, featuring interactive installations. The second Kochi-Muziris Biennale in Kerala, curated by Jitish Kallat, includes 95 artists from 30 countries.
