Martin Errichiello's audio work 'campanamuta' revives the vanished Calabrian village of Eranova

artist · 2026-04-24

Artist Martin Errichiello (born 1987, Naples) created '[campanamuta]', a six-episode audio piece that aired on RAI Radio 3's 'Zazà' in late 2025 and is now available on RaiPlay Sound. The work recounts the story of Eranova, a village founded in 1896 near Reggio Calabria by farmworkers led by Ferdinando Rombolà, who rebelled against a baron. Eranova was destroyed by 1980 after the Christian Democracy party planned the never-built V Centro Siderurgico in 1972; residents were displaced to San Ferdinando and Gioia Tauro. Errichiello's non-linear narrative weaves residents' memories with his original texts, exploring microhistory and the tension between personal and collective memory. The project originated from a 2015 photographic residency in Calabria and evolved from the multidisciplinary research 'In Quarta Persona' (2018). Errichiello is also developing a film on Eranova. He draws parallels between Eranova and Palestine, emphasizing attachment to land and the experience of displacement.
