Martin Creed's 'Understanding' Neon Installation in New York
British artist Martin Creed (born 1968) has installed a monumental neon sculpture titled 'Understanding' on the Brooklyn waterfront, visible from the Manhattan skyline. The work, created in collaboration with the non-profit Public Art Fund (active since 1977), features the word 'Understanding' in letters approximately three meters high mounted on a 15-meter double-T beam. It rotates at varying speeds, creating a meditative, almost hypnotic experience. Creed explained that the piece originated from a greeting gesture with his stepdaughter involving the words 'Peace, Love and Understanding,' but he opted for 'Understanding' alone due to cost. The artist is known for previous neon word installations such as 'Mothers,' 'Everything is going to be alright,' 'Love,' 'People,' and 'Everything,' but this is his largest and most dramatically sited. The installation has attracted over 200 selfies and photos uploaded to the Public Art Fund's Instagram account within days. It will be removed on October 23, 2016. The work is located at Pier 6, Brooklyn Bridge Park.
