Martin Creed's 'The Back Door' at Park Avenue Armory surveys 20 years of motorized doors, videos, and provocations.

exhibition · 2026-04-22

From June 8 to August 7, 2016, the Park Avenue Armory in New York hosted Martin Creed's exhibition titled 'The Back Door.' This Turner Prize-winning artist presented a selection of over twenty years of his creations within the expansive 55,000-square-foot Wade Thompson Drill Hall, emphasizing the concepts of opening and closing. A continuously operating motorized rear door, 'Shutters Opening and Closing' (2016), brightened the venue. The exhibition featured large curtains, a slamming grand piano, and coordinated pieces such as 'A Door Opening and Closing' (1995) alongside 'The Lights Going On and Off' (1996). Videos depicted women with partially eaten food, while sculptures included a stack of cardboard boxes and an 8-foot plywood structure, referencing Pollock and Minimalism to question high art norms.
