Martin Creed's Playful Retrospective at Centro Botín, Santander
Martin Creed (b. 1968, Wakefield) presents 'Amigos' at Centro Botín in Santander, curated by Benjamin Weil. The exhibition transforms Renzo Piano's architecture into a multidimensional project. On the second floor, a transparent irregular parallelepiped room offers views of the old town and the bay, with 41 geometric murals in black, white, and multicolored lines, plus a wall repeating 'Refugiados'. A live musical performance by students from Santander Conservatory lasts 40 minutes and loops daily, with three alternating quartets. Staff uniforms were created via action painting on live subjects. The elevator features a sound piece of ascending 'yes' and descending 'no'. Creed comments on criticism and Brexit, noting that crises can foster artistic rebellion. The show runs until June 9, 2019. Concurrently, the 25th edition of the Botín Foundation's plastic arts scholarship exhibition features eight winners from 2017, including works by Celia-Yunior & Henry Eric Hernández, Fernando García, Rosell Meesguee, and Fermín Jiménez Landa, until May 12.
