Martial Raysse Retrospective at Centre Pompidou Traces 50-Year Career from Pop to Hermetic Visions
From May 14 to September 22, 2014, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris presented "Martial Raysse: Rétrospective 1960-2012," featuring over 200 pieces from the French artist's extensive career spanning five decades. Raysse's artistic journey includes a Pop art period in the 1960s and a more introspective phase following 1968. Notable works in the exhibition included the installation "Raysse Plage" from 1962 and the 1965 piece "L'appel des cimes: Tableau horrible." His films, such as "Jésus-Cola" (1966) and "Le Grand Départ" (1972), intertwine themes of politics and childhood. The retrospective culminated with the impressive 30-foot-long painting "Ici plage, comme ici-bas" (2012). Born in 1936, Raysse drew inspiration from Jean Cocteau and Pablo Picasso and was associated with the School of Nice.
