Martha Rosler and Steve Edwards in Conversation at Whitechapel Gallery
On 11 July 2014, Martha Rosler will join Steve Edwards at the Whitechapel Gallery in London for a discussion centered on her work 'The Bowery in two inadequate descriptive systems' (1974–75). Edwards authored the One Work book on this piece, which combines twenty-one black-and-white photographs, twenty-four text panels, and three blank panels to merge art with political documentary. The talk will explore Rosler's influential practice, starting from this pivotal photo-text work. Edwards' book contextualizes the piece within the San Diego Group, critiques of documentary, political modernism (including Jean-Luc Godard), and the pastoral tradition. The event runs from 19:00 to 21:00, with tickets at £8.50 (£6.50 concessions).
