Martha Graham Dance Company to Perform in Florence and Ravenna
The Martha Graham Dance Company, the oldest American dance company, will perform in Italy this June. After concluding its latest season at the Joyce Theater in New York's Chelsea, the company will bring its repertoire to Florence from June 11 to 13 and to Ravenna on June 17. The performances include "Errand into the Maze" (1947), a mythological work originally designed by Noguchi (whose sets were damaged by Hurricane Sandy), now staged with a focus on intensity and choreographic meaning. Contemporary choreographers reinterpret the iconic solo "Lamentation" in personal tributes, while the pelvic movement that inspired "Ekstasis" has been reimagined by Virginie Mécène. The program concludes with "Diversion of Angels," a piece where Graham looked to the future, abandoning narrative for a flow of movements and emotions exploring the nuances of love. Notable Italian dancers include Lorenzo Pagano from Turin, Marzia Memoli from Palermo, and Alessio Crognale from Abruzzo.
