Martha Cooper's 'Street Wise' exhibition at Bronx Documentary Center celebrates six-decade career
On April 9, 2026, the Bronx Documentary Center launched the exhibition Street Wise, which will be on display until June 14, 2026. This showcase highlights Martha Cooper's extensive six-decade journey capturing urban environments, community dynamics, and artistic creativity, including elements like graffiti, breaking, BMX, and casitas. Co-curated as part of the BDC program, the exhibition features a collection of books, cameras, and numerous photographs, with signage created by TATS CRU members. During the opening, attendees eagerly awaited posters of Cooper's iconic Dondi images, while John Ahearn and Rigoberto Torres performed a live plaster casting demonstration. Notable guests included Futura, John 'Crash' Matos, and Charlie Ahearn. Itzel Robles Sandoval noted in Blind Magazine that Cooper effectively 'brought the streets she photographed into a single room.'
