Marta Fernández Calvo performs 'Una vajilla, una premonición' at IVAM

On May 17, 2026, at 12:00, artist Marta Fernández Calvo will present the performance 'Una vajilla, una premonición' at IVAM Centre Julio González in Valencia, as part of the exhibition 'A media lumbre'. The performance centers on a green Duralex tableware set inherited from a non-family, exploring over a decade of artistic practice around food. It activates networks of affection and materials generated in dialogue with women communities in Oaxaca, Mexico City, Guadalajara, La Rioja, Madrid, and Traspielas. The piece was first presented in 2024 at the Lazos Mecánicos II performance festival curated by Iñaki Martínez Antelo at ARTIUM Museoa in Vitoria, with later iterations at Matadero Madrid's environmental residency open days and the Bienal de Pontevedra. The exhibition 'A media lumbre' gathers contemporary art proposals that elevate traditionally marginalized materials like ceramics, clay, wool, textiles, embroidery, esparto, palm, wicker, and other natural fibers, including sounds and silences. Voice is present as a reclamation of oral tradition as a vehicle for memory, reminiscent of ancient 'filandones'—nightly gatherings around the hearth for manual labor.
