Marta Czok, stateless artist who chronicled migration, dies at 78

Marta Czok, a stateless artist originally from Poland, passed away from a heart attack on February 6, 2025, at the age of 78. She was born in Beirut to Polish refugees and moved to London in 1948, where she studied at St Martin's School of Art. In 1974, she relocated to Italy and married Valter Scarso. Over her career spanning more than forty years, Czok showcased her work at various venues, including the Polish Embassy in Rome, Alitalia per l'Arte, and Albemarle Gallery. Significant exhibitions featured Icons&Idols (2013) and a retrospective at Castello di Calatabiano (2014). The Fondazione Marta Czok was founded in 2020 to maintain her legacy. At the time of her passing, she was organizing new exhibitions in Italy, Poland, and the UK.
