MART Rovereto presents dual exhibitions on image and memory

The MART in Rovereto is hosting two distinct exhibitions that explore the status of the image between history and contemporaneity, memory and oblivion. One focuses on the filmed image by Yervant Gianikian (Merano, 1942) and Angela Ricci Lucchi (Lugo, 1942 – Milan, 2018), while the other presents photographic works by Italo Zannier (Spilimbergo, 1932). The duo Gianikian and Ricci Lucchi are known for their extraordinary, hard-to-define filmmaking. Now that Ricci Lucchi has passed away, her husband continues their work. The exhibition features "I diari di Angela, Noi due cineasti. Capitolo secondo" (2019), recently acquired by the Mart, which mixes archival images, diary pages, and testimonies into a dreamlike stream of consciousness. A large hall is dedicated to this projection, alongside "Trittico del XX secolo" (2002-2008), a five-channel projection of slowed, color-shifted archival footage depicting historical violence. The treatment emphasizes the rawness of the material, making the viewer a witness or accomplice. In contrast, the Zannier exhibition showcases one hundred of his photographs, ranging from academic to original and intense, evoking graceful melancholy. Display cases contain treasures collected over decades: illustrated books from various eras, tracing the evolution of image reproduction and the relationship between image and reality, from pre-photography illustrations to contemporary artist books.
