Mart Rovereto Hosts Largest Retrospective of Neo-Romantic Painter Eugene Berman
The Mart museum in Rovereto, Italy, has unveiled "Modern Classic," a comprehensive retrospective showcasing the works of Eugene Berman (1899–1972), a painter and stage designer of Russian origin associated with the Neo-Romantic movement. This exhibition, curated by Sara De Angelis, Denis Isaia, Peter Benson Miller, and Ilaria Schiaffini, includes more than 100 paintings and paper works, as well as Berman's antiquities and archival items. It chronicles his journey from Russia to Paris, the U.S., and finally Rome, where he established his home in 1958. After being exiled in 1917, he learned from Nabis artists and became part of the Neo-Romantics in 1926. Despite facing difficulties in the U.S., he created groundbreaking art and left nearly 3000 antiquities to Italy upon his death in 1972.
