Marseille's J4 and FRAC PACA: Black and White Ornaments

architecture-design · 2026-04-24

In 2013, Marseille became the European Capital of Culture, inaugurating several landmark buildings. Among the most remarkable are the J4 pavilion of the MuCEM by Rudy Ricciotti and the FRAC Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur by Kengo Kuma. Ricciotti's J4 uses ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete (BFUHP) to create a self-supporting lattice that evokes coral, volcanic rock, or oriental calligraphy, blending abstraction and decoration. The building, a seventy-two-meter-wide grille enclosing an eighteen-meter-high glass parallelepiped, connects to Fort Saint-Jean and the Panier district via two footbridges. Kengo Kuma's FRAC PACA, located in the Joliette district, features a facade of white enameled glass panels on a metal structure, creating a "multipolar and multifaceted light." The building is organized around "superimposed streets" and offers multiple viewpoints. Both architects reject formal clichés, focusing on material expressiveness and sensory experience. Ricciotti's work continues his exploration of concrete's plasticity, while Kuma's design emphasizes openness and integration with the neighborhood. The MuCEM's inaugural exhibitions include "Le Noir et le Bleu, un rêve méditerranéen" and "Au Bazar du genre," while the FRAC PACA presents "Ulysses au Frac" with works by Hans Op de Beeck, Franck Pourcel, Jean-Christophe Norman, and Stéphane Le Mercier.
