Marlene Dumas Market Records: $3.56M 'The Visitor' Still Top

South African-born painter Marlene Dumas (b. 1953) holds an auction record of €3,563,070 for 'The Visitor' (July 2008), which remains unbeaten. Her 2017 sales included 'Colorfields' (1997) at Phillips New York for €3,189,200, 'Magdalena (Underwear and Bedtime Stories)' at Sotheby's US for €2,546,940, and 'The yellow finger of the artist' at Phillips for €2,546,940. In spring 2018, 'The Pilgrim' (2006) sold at Phillips London for £1,749,000. Dumas represented the Netherlands at the 1995 Venice Biennale, had a 1996 Tate Modern exhibition, and a 2008 retrospective 'Measuring Your Own Grave' co-organized by MOCA Los Angeles and MoMA New York, also shown at Menil Collection Houston.
