Marlene Barros exhibition at CCBB BH transforms sewing into feminist narrative

exhibition · 2026-04-19

From March 4 to June 1, Marlene Barros showcases 'Tecitura do Feminino' at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil in Belo Horizonte. Curated by Betânia Pinheiro, this exhibition includes sculptures, crochet, and embroidery that explore the female form and the historical undervaluation of women's contributions to art. Notable pieces consist of 'Eu tenho a tua cara,' which features 49 stitched faces, 'Caixa Preta' showcasing self-portraits, and 'Coso porque está roto,' highlighting a coat adorned with embroidered organs. 'Entre nós' examines household responsibilities, while 'Quem pariu, que embale' critiques childcare dynamics. Designed by Fábio Nunes, the exhibition encourages personal engagement. Barros, a prominent figure in Maranhão's art community, created this exhibition based on her master's research at Universidade de Aveiro. It is open Wednesday to Monday from 10 am to 10 pm at Praça da Liberdade, 450.
