Mark Manders on Self-Portrait as a Building and Poetic Sculpture
Mark Manders, a Dutch artist, has been working on a project called Self-Portrait as a Building since 1986, which draws inspiration from a made-up character. His sculptures blend everyday items, furniture, and figures of both people and animals, acting as relics in this fictional setting. Right now, you can check out his exhibition, 'Parallel Occurrences/Documented Assignments,' at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, running until January 2, 2011, before it moves to places like the Aspen Art Museum and the Walker Art Center. Manders started this journey after a romantic encounter and created the 2010 piece, Two Interconnected Houses, featuring homes joined by tunnels. He works in Ronse, Belgium, with help from his dad, and also co-manages ROMA Publications while trying out new ideas in supermarkets.
