Mark Leckey's O' Magic Power of Bleakness at Tate Britain explores British subcultures through dystopian visions.

exhibition · 2026-04-20

At Tate Britain, Mark Leckey's exhibition O' Magic Power of Bleakness reimagines the gallery as a motorway underpass, offering an immersive experience that combines both new and retrospective works. The display features iconic pieces such as Dream English Kid 1964–1999 AD (2015) and Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore (1999), alongside the recent five-screen video installation Under Under In (2019). This installation, illuminated by sodium-yellow streetlight, mirrors the underside of a flyover on the M53 near Leckey's childhood home in Wirral, northern England. Dream English Kid weaves a visual narrative through clips from 1964 to 1999, while Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore explores British urban subcultures. The exhibition, which runs until 5 January 2020, is documented by photographer Mark Blower and was reviewed in ArtReview's online exclusive on 27 September 2019.
