Mark Leckey's Nobodaddy Installation and Corin Sworn's Exhibition Highlight Glasgow International Festival
Mark Leckey's installation Nobodaddy at Tramway features an oversized sculpture of Job that broadcasts a monologue through speakers embedded in its body. The sculpture, resembling a precursor to Rodin's Thinker, reflects on fear of eternity with a Manchester accent against rave-era keyboard sounds and bursts of light. A floor-to-ceiling video mirrors the sculpture within the darkened warehouse space. This work condenses the festival's themes from the director's programme titled Cellular World: Cyborg-Human-Avatar-Horror. Corin Sworn's WORK HOUSE at Koppe Astner presents paintings by Serge Charchoune, a French-Russian painter whose works span Surrealism, monochrome abstraction, and Fauvism. His 1933 painting La Petite Liseuse anticipates Gerhard Richter's blurred photo-paintings with its ghostly haze. Charchoune's nuanced color and tone juxtapositions, known as valeur, captivate viewers. Additional works by Charchoune and a painting by Carol Rhodes are displayed at Oxford House, which she runs with Merlin James at 42 Carlton Place. The festival addresses contemporary anxieties about technology and human struggles with governing structures like time.
