Mark Handforth's Light Vortex Illuminates Baroque Church in Cremona

Mark Handforth, born in Hong Kong in 1969 and based in Miami, presents "White-Light-Whirlwind" at San Carlo Cremona, a deconsecrated 17th-century church repurposed as a contemporary art space. The exhibition runs until May 31 and features a monumental light sculpture that spirals 16 meters across the baroque dome. Handforth is known for large-scale sculptures that distort everyday objects, blending Minimalism and Pop with irony. The show includes multiple site-specific interventions, with the light vortex as the centerpiece, described by the artist as a metaphysical landscape bridging architectural glory and spiritual resonance. The project is curated by Francesca Minini (not related to the Minini gallery family) in collaboration with Apalazzogallery, and was initiated by French artist Servane Mary in September 2021. The exhibition is produced with Galleria Franco Noero of Turin. Handforth's work often engages with the disorienting scale of American cities, altering materials and proportions to create absurd, physically imposing objects. San Carlo Cremona, located on via Bissolati, was reopened after years of abandonment by Servane Mary's solo show, and now hosts a year-long series of exhibitions curated by Minini, each featuring a different artist friend.
