Marissa Nadler and The Third Sound: Dual Artistic Visions

In a double interview on Artribune, musicians Marissa Nadler and Hákon Aðalsteinsson (The Third Sound) share their definitions of art and music, their self-identification as artists, and their favorite visual artworks. Nadler, a US songwriter born in Washington, D.C. in 1981, cites Francesca Woodman's photography, Egon Schiele, Giacometti, Chagall, Jenny Saville, Kandinsky, Turner, and Wyeth as influences. She describes art as something that resonates emotionally and music as a form of art expressing what words cannot. Aðalsteinsson, an Icelandic musician formerly of Singapore Sling, founded The Third Sound in 2010, releasing a debut album on Anton Newcombe's label A Recording Ltd. and touring with Brian Jonestown Massacre. He names Dario Argento's films and Icelandic artist Alfreð Flóki's macabre drawings as visual inspirations.
