Marisol Escobar: A Retrospective Revives the Legacy of a Pop Art Pioneer

exhibition · 2026-05-07

The Buffalo AKG Art Museum is presenting 'Marisol: A Retrospective', the most extensive exhibition of Venezuelan artist Marisol Escobar (1930–2016), showcasing 244 pieces. This traveling display will be hosted by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts from October 7, 2023, to January 21, 2024, followed by the Toledo Museum of Art from March 2 to June 2, 2024, the Buffalo AKG Art Museum from July 12, 2024, to January 6, 2025, and finally the Dallas Museum of Art from February 23 to July 6, 2025. An influential figure in 1960s Pop Art, Marisol was celebrated for her totemic wooden sculptures and dry wit. She studied with Hans Hofmann and was introduced to the art world by Leo Castelli, who featured her in a solo exhibition in 1957. Although she gained recognition—appearing in Andy Warhol's films and representing Venezuela at the 1968 Venice Biennale—she later withdrew from public life and passed away in relative obscurity. The retrospective utilizes archival materials housed at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum.
