Marion Greenstone Anthological Exhibition in Palermo

exhibition · 2026-05-05

An anthological exhibition titled #Composition# dedicated to American painter Marion Greenstone (New York, 1925-2005) is on view at the Real Albergo dei Poveri in Palermo. Organized by Mesime, Associazione Siculo Mediterranea per la Cultura, with the Polo Museale Regionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Palermo, the show is the result of extensive research by her sister Cora Hahn. Greenstone, who studied literature and taught English, began painting in the 1940s as a private act of gender revolution in her Brooklyn apartment. Her works, often untitled and identified only by catalogue numbers, employ oil paint in thin layers to create microcosms of color. She was influenced by Abstract Expressionism (Arshile Gorky), European masters (René Magritte, Jean Fautrier, Giorgio Morandi), and later Pop Art and Minimalism. Her mixed-media pieces incorporate fabric collages and found imagery. The exhibition also includes thirty works on paper from her final nature-inspired cycle, displayed at Spazio Contemporaneo Agorà, featuring pencils, inks, and watercolors that evoke Georgia O’Keeffe and Eastern calligraphy.
