Mario Schifano's Unseen 1960s Works Debut in Milan's Spazio Roseto
An exhibition of over 20 previously unseen paintings by Mario Schifano (1934–1998) opened on April 17, 2024, at Spazio Roseto in Milan, running until May 19. Curated by Monica Schifano and Marco Meneguzzo, the show features works from 1966–1968 sourced from private collections, including those of Roseto e Harves, a company backed by real estate holding Hopafin. The venue, a renovated 17th-century convent, offers a view of a new 10-story building by Arassociati with linear terraces and hanging gardens reminiscent of Milan's nearby Bosco Verticale. Key works include 'Inevitable viaggio a Marrakesh,' 'Compagni (bacio),' 'Oasi (o Palme),' and 'Tutte stelle'—the latter an 8-canvas immersive piece originally created in 1967 for Princess Patrizia Ruspoli's Rome apartment, reproduced here. The exhibition highlights Schifano's engagement with social change, sexual liberation, and political protest, particularly the 1968 student movements, as seen in series like 'Oasi' and 'Compagni Compagni.' A rare photograph of the princess among the star murals accompanies the catalog.
