Mario Schifano's Rare Works on View at Gallerie d'Italia Napoli

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Gallerie d'Italia Napoli marks its first anniversary in the monumental Piacentini palace with a major Mario Schifano exhibition curated by Luca Massimo Barbero. Over fifty significant works span three decades (1960–1990), including nearly unseen pieces from Intesa Sanpaolo's Agrati Collection. The show repositions Schifano as a precise, surgical pioneer rather than the gestural pop artist of Coca-Cola imagery. Highlights include early 'monochromes' that captivated dealer Ileana Sonnabend, Futurist and de Chirico homages, 1968 'Compagni' works, star-and-palm paintings referencing his Libyan childhood, 1970s emulsion canvases and acid TV landscapes, and 1980s large-scale returns to painting. The installation uses the ground-floor salon for monumental works and upper-floor former offices for more intimate pieces, with seating inviting passersby on Via Toledo. Loans come from Museo del Novecento Milano, Ca' Pesaro Venezia, and private collections. Michele Coppola, head of Gallerie d'Italia, calls Naples an 'absolute cultural capital' within the bank's national museum network.
