Mario Schifano's 'Io guardo' at Galleria Lombardi in Rome

A new exhibition titled 'Mario Schifano | Io guardo' is on view at Galleria Lombardi in Rome until May 16, 2026. Curated by Lorenzo and Enrico Lombardi, the show features about twenty works spanning from the early 1960s to the early 1990s, including monochromes, advertising signs, anemic landscapes, the 'Futurismo rivisitato' series, equestrian paintings, and chromatic materials from the 1990s. The title references Schifano's own words: 'I do not get inspired. I observe, I look... My work is born from the outside, from reality that I manage to capture through the media.' The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog with a critical text by Silvia Pegoraro, who emphasizes Schifano's intellectual autonomy and experimental drive. Meanwhile, a major retrospective of Schifano's career continues at Palazzo delle Esposizioni until May 27, 2026, featuring over 100 works from his entire career, from his first solo show in 1959 at Galleria Appia Antica to his late works from the 1990s. Schifano (Homs, 1934 – Rome, 1998) was a central figure of the Scuola di Piazza del Popolo and achieved international recognition in the 1960s, exhibiting in the United States and at the Venice Biennale. He continued to experiment with photography and new media in his later years.
