Mario Schifano's 'Germinal' Opens at Magazzino Italian Art in Cold Spring

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Magazzino Italian Art in Cold Spring, New York, will host 'Germinal', a major exhibition of Mario Schifano's work from March 23 to August 9, 2024. Curated by newly appointed director Filippo Fossati, the show spans Schifano's output from 1960 to 1970, a decade of intense social and artistic change. It includes early monochrome paintings, works with signs, numbers, and letters, and later pieces revisiting Futurism. The exhibition takes place in the Robert Olnick Pavilion, designed by architects Alberto Campo Baeza and Miguel Quisimondo. Accompanying events include film screenings, publications, and talks. The show is organized in collaboration with the Archivio Mario Schifano and the Archivio Maurizio Calvesi. Fossati describes Schifano as a charismatic figure who made art for a broad audience, not just an elite. Magazzino Italian Art was founded in 2017 by collectors Giorgio Spanu and Nancy Olnick to promote Italian art, previously featuring Carlo Scarpa and Ettore Spalletti.
