Mario Schifano's Early Works at Giò Marconi, Milan

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Galleria Giò Marconi in Milan presents 'Qualcos’altro', an exhibition focusing on Mario Schifano's early monochromes and drawings from the early 1960s. The show includes works like 'True Love Number One' and the eponymous 'Qualcos’altro' (1962), a gray-blue monochrome. Schifano, born in Homs in 1934 and died in Rome in 1998, was a key figure in the Roman art scene, frequenting Caffè Rosati in Piazza del Popolo. His talent was first recognized by Emilio Villa, then gallerist Plinio De Martiis and critic Maurizio Calvesi. In 1974, Arturo Carlo Quintavalle curated his first retrospective at Salone delle Scuderie in Pilotta, Parma, and a show at Studio Marconi in Milan. Schifano's early work was influenced by Roman billboards and, after arriving in New York on December 3, 1963, by black billboards following JFK's assassination. The exhibition is curated by Alberto Salvadori.
