Mario Schifano retrospective opens at Schauwerk Museum in Germany

The Schauwerk Museum in Sindelfingen, near Stuttgart, has opened the first museum retrospective in Germany dedicated to Mario Schifano (1934–1998), one of the most important Italian artists of the 20th century. The exhibition, titled "Mario Schifano. When I remember," runs until June 21, 2026, with free admission. It features over 80 works spanning Schifano's entire career, from the early 1960s to his final creative phase in the 1990s. The show includes paintings, collages, drawings, films, and photographs, many containing biographical and historical references—such as the Vietnam War and encounters with New York art figures like Andy Warhol, Frank Kline, and Frank O'Hara. The exhibition is organized in close collaboration with the Fondazione Marconi in Milan and supported by the Archivio Mario Schifano in Rome. It highlights Schifano's relentless experimentation with materials and techniques, focusing on his fascination with media and technological advances like television. The Schauwerk Museum, housed in a former industrial hall, is one of southern Germany's leading contemporary art spaces, with a permanent collection of over 3,500 works from the 20th and 21st centuries, including pieces by Lucio Fontana, Georg Baselitz, Anselm Kiefer, Katharina Grosse, and Anish Kapoor. The collection was built over 30 years by local entrepreneur Peter Schaufler (1940–2015) and his wife Christiane Schaufler-Münch (1934–2025).
