Mario Schifano Retrospective at Palazzo Esposizioni Roma Examines Image, Surface, and Temporality

exhibition · 2026-04-19

From March 17 to July 12, 2026, Palazzo Esposizioni Roma will host a significant retrospective of Mario Schifano's artistic journey. Curated by Daniela Lancioni, the exhibition begins with immersive installations and features a notable reconstruction of a 1968 dining room for the Agnelli family in the central Rotonda. Early sections of the exhibit focus on Schifano's origins in the late 1950s and his monochrome works from the early 1960s, backed by gallerist Ileana Sonnabend. Pieces such as 'Elemento per grande paesaggio' and 'Tempo moderno' hint at his fascination with mediated images. The exhibition explores the tension between image and painting, drawing parallels with Tano Festa. It also showcases his film projects and later complex paintings. Supported by Eni and Fondazione Silvano Toti, with a catalog published by Electa, the event is promoted by Rome's Department of Culture and produced in collaboration with Intesa Sanpaolo.
