Mario Sasso: pioniere della videoarte in Rai tra sigle e pittura digitale

Mario Sasso, born in Staffolo in 1934 and currently residing in Rome, is an experimental artist and a pioneer in video art. In an interview with Artribune, he discusses his extensive relationship with Rai, which began in 1959 when he was recruited for his drawings. In 1968, he created Italy's first animated television logo for the show "Non è mai troppo tardi," inspired by court scribes in Rome who wrote for the illiterate. Sasso went on to design logos for news programs (TG2, TG3) and satellite channels (RaiSat), employing cutting-edge technologies like Paintbox and 3D computer graphics with music by Brian Eno. He received the Nica d’oro at the Linz Electronic Art Festival in 1990 and the Guggenheim award in 1998. Since the 1980s, he has focused on digital painting, initially photographing screens and printing in London, and now utilizing Cinecittà's labs in Italy. At 85, Sasso continues to explore innovative artistic expressions through digital mediums, viewing computers as endless sources of artistic creation.
