Mario Oddone Cavaglieri: The Painter of High Society Who Sought Solitude

Mario Oddone Cavaglieri (Rovigo, 1887 – Pavie-sur-Gers, 1969) was an Italian painter known for depicting elegant women in richly furnished interiors. Born into an aristocratic Jewish family, he grew up in Padua, studied law briefly, then turned to painting under Giovanni Vianello alongside Felice Casorati. His career peaked between 1913 and 1925, with exhibitions in Italy and abroad, attracting wealthy patrons and even the attention of art historian Roberto Longhi. In 1925, he retreated to a villa in Pavie-sur-Gers, France, where he painted rural landscapes and exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in Paris. During WWII, he returned to Italy but faced persecution; much of his family was deported. After the war, he settled back in France. His work is now promoted by Galleria dello Scudo in Verona, which held a retrospective in 1993 curated by Maurizio Fagiolo dell'Arco, Raffaele Monti, and Viviane Vareilles.
