Mario Martone's 'Nostalgia' Premieres at Cannes 75

Mario Martone's film 'Nostalgia' premiered in competition at the 75th Cannes Film Festival and will be released in Italian theaters on May 25, 2022, by Medusa Film. Based on the novel by Ermanno Rea, the story follows Felice Lasco (played by Pierfrancesco Favino), a man who returns to his native Rione Sanità neighborhood in Naples after 40 years abroad, confronting his past and a childhood friend who has become a local crime boss. The cast includes Francesco Di Leva as Don Luigi Rega, Tommaso Ragno as O malommo, and Aurora Quattrocchi as Teresa Lasco. The film explores themes of nostalgia, redemption, and the labyrinthine nature of the neighborhood, shot with a handheld camera in a documentary style. Martone co-wrote the screenplay with Ippolita Di Majo, and the film opens with a quote by Pier Paolo Pasolini: 'Knowledge lies in nostalgia. He who has not lost himself does not possess it.'
