Mario Martone's biopic on Goliarda Sapienza starring Valeria Golino begins filming

Production has commenced on Fuori, a film directed by Mario Martone that explores the life of Goliarda Sapienza (Catania, 1924 – Gaeta, 1996), co-written with Ippolita Di Majo. This year celebrates the centenary of the author's birth, and alongside Valeria Golino's directed series L'arte della gioia (set to air on Sky this autumn), Golino portrays Sapienza in the biopic. In a recent conversation with L'Espresso, she remarked, "The spirit of Goliarda haunts me. I am inhabited by her like a puppet, and I am delighted; we will tell a beautiful story of women filmed inside and outside Rebibbia prison." The narrative covers Sapienza's incarceration for jewelry theft, driven by poverty stemming from her novel's failure. Her time in Rebibbia, detailed in L'università di Rebibbia, becomes transformative through connections with young inmates. After her release during a sweltering Roman summer, she maintains her visits to these women, forging a profound bond that is often misinterpreted by society. The film is a collaboration between Italy and France, produced by Indigo Film with Rai Cinema and The Apartment in Italy, alongside SRAB Films in France, in partnership with Fremantle. The cast features Matilda De Angelis and Elodie, with cinematography by Paolo Carnera, editing by Jacopo Quadri, set design by Carmine Guarino, and costumes by Loredana Buscemi. Fuori will be released in Italy by 01 Distribution.
