Mario Dondero retrospective at Palazzo Reale, Milan

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Palazzo Reale in Milan hosts the first retrospective of Italian photojournalist Mario Dondero (1928–2015), curated by Raffaella Perna with active participation from the Archivio Mario Dondero represented by his daughter Maddalena Fossati Dondero. The exhibition spans ten thematic rooms, featuring iconic works and previously unseen photographs, including portraits of Pier Paolo Pasolini and Laura Betti. Highlights include images of internal migration in Italy (second room), Irish student protests (third room), portraits of cultural figures (rooms four to six), the famous Nouveau Roman group in Paris (seventh room), and a chronological journey through France from the late 1950s to 2011 (eighth room). The ninth room focuses on Dondero's African works, reflecting his lifelong commitment to documenting social injustices, rooted in his partisan youth in Val d’Ossola. The final room gathers images from the late 1970s onward from around the world. A catalogue published by Silvana Editoriale accompanies the show.
