architecture-design · 2026-04-26

Mario Cucinella's e-building for Ferrari has opened in Maranello, inaugurated by President Sergio Mattarella. The 42,000-square-meter facility, designed by MCA – Mario Cucinella Architects, will produce the entire Ferrari range, including electric models. Cucinella received the Compasso d'Oro award on the same day for his exhibition design at the Museo d'arte della Fondazione Luigi Rovati in Milan. The e-building is located within the historic 'Villaggio Ferrari,' which includes contributions from architects Renzo Piano, Marco Visconti, Luigi Sturchio, Jean Nouvel, and Massimiliano Fuksas. Cucinella focused on the building envelope, worker environment, and relationship with Maranello, working since 2022. Structural and systems design was by PlannIng Ingegneria e Pianificazione S.r.l. of Bologna. The facade combines prefabricated panels with opaline and transparent glass, creating a 'luminous lantern' effect at night. Energy strategies include photovoltaic panels, heat pump climate control, and a water storage tank, aiming for NZeb class A2 performance. The facade uses Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA) principles. The building features high automation, green spaces including a roof garden, and relaxation areas.
