Mario Cresci retrospective at GAMeC Bergamo spans 50 years of photography
Mario Cresci (born 1942, Chiavari; lives in Bergamo) co-curates with Cristina Rodeschini, director of Accademia Carrara, a retrospective of his own work at GAMeC in Bergamo. Titled "La fotografia del no 1964–2016" (a phrase borrowed from Goffredo Fofi), the exhibition presents over fifty years of work in sections that avoid strict chronology, instead building intimate resonances across different phases of his research. Cresci's practice moves between conceptual art, social analysis, and visual training, spanning from Liguria to Venice, Rome, Matera, and Bergamo. The show includes early ethnographic work from 1967 in Tricarico, Basilicata, where he photographed homes and families for an urban planning project. Later series include "D'après" (1985), copies of historical photographs that reveal mental maps; "Transizioni" (1967–2016), interior studies; and "Metafore" (2013–16), depicting anonymous figures wrapped in thermal blankets as symbols of rescue. A comprehensive catalog accompanies the exhibition.
