architecture-design · 2026-04-27

In October 2023, a new tower designed by architect Mario Botta was officially opened in Milan for Teatro alla Scala, marking the conclusion of a project that commenced on April 26, 2021. Situated on Via Verdi, this tower replaces a previous structure owned by Istituto Sanpaolo di Torino. The initiative, which cost €23 million and received funding from the Italian state and Regione Lombardia, is projected to save €500,000 annually. The building reaches 19 meters underground and 38 meters above ground, comprising 11 floors along with 6 subterranean levels. It includes Botticino fiorito stone, solar panels, and connects to the Piermarini building through seven passages. Additionally, the underground area features a 14-meter high orchestra rehearsal hall, with completion anticipated in spring 2024. Protests from unions have emerged regarding unfinished interior fittings.
