Mario Botta's Fiore di Pietra on Monte Generoso: Tourist Trap or Masterpiece?

architecture-design · 2026-05-05

Since its inauguration in April 2017, Mario Botta's Fiore di Pietra (Stone Flower) on Monte Generoso has attracted over 50,000 visitors. The structure, built in gray stone, glass, and steel, houses a gourmet restaurant (125 seats), a self-service cafeteria (120 seats on a panoramic terrace), a pro-shop, and a conference room across four floors, topped with a classic panoramic rooftop. Access is via a 45-minute funicular ride covering 9 km from Capolago station (26 km from Lugano, 12 km from Chiasso) to the 1700-meter summit, costing 54 euros per person. Departures run hourly from 9:05 to 16:05. Critics have described the building as looking like an obese thistle in photographs, but in person it appears suspended in the void, with 360-degree views of the lake and valleys. Ten hiking trails and a via ferrata are available, along with mountain bike routes and a paragliding school. Visitors notably carry their waste back down the mountain without prompting, respecting alpine rules. The article questions whether the Fiore di Pietra is a beautiful tourist trap or an environmental eyesore legitimized by an international architecture star.
