Mario Botta designs new tower for Teatro alla Scala in Milan

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

On April 26, 2021, the cornerstone was laid for a new building at Via Verdi in Milan, completing the Teatro alla Scala complex. Designed by Mario Botta in collaboration with Emilio Pizzi's studio, the project marks Botta's return to the historic theater after his earlier restoration and expansion (2001-2004). The new volume replaces a property acquired in 1997 from Istituto San Paolo di Torino. It will feature Botta's signature style: pure volumes, defined geometries, and interplay of solids and voids. The structure extends 18 meters below ground (below the water table) and rises 36 meters above ground, matching the height of the 2004 stage tower. It comprises six underground and eleven above-ground floors. The project aims to enhance engineering services and stage equipment, provide new rehearsal spaces, and relocate administrative offices currently in external sites. Underground spaces include a 310-square-meter orchestra rehearsal hall with 14-meter height, designed with acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota for impeccable sound and recording capability. The stage will expand to 70 meters with a dedicated area for scenery assembly and disassembly without disrupting performances. Additional facilities include a dance rehearsal room and spaces for the historical archive. The total investment is €17 million, with completion expected by December 2022.
