Marinko Sudac's Eastern European Avant-Garde Collection Opens in Milan
The Marinko Sudac Collection, one of the most comprehensive holdings of Eastern European avant-garde art, is now on view at the Frigoriferi Milanesi in Milan. Titled 'Modernità non allineata' (Non-Aligned Modernity) and curated by Marco Scotini, the exhibition features over 600 works by 100 artists from the 1950s to the 1980s, including Ivan Picelj, Marina Abramović, Đuro Seder, Željko Jerman, and Tamás St. Auby. The collection, based in Zagreb, focuses on avant-garde practices from the former Yugoslavia and other Eastern Bloc countries during the Cold War, challenging the binary East-West narrative. Sudac, founder of the Museum of the Avant-garde platform, began collecting in 1989 and has built a resource that has lent works to Tate Modern, the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb, the Ludwig Museum in Budapest, the Haus der Kunst in Munich, and Nottingham Contemporary. The exhibition runs from October 27 to December 23, 2016, with an opening on October 26. Sudac emphasizes the collection's role in redefining cultural heritage and plans future retrospectives at the Institute for Avant-Garde Research in Zagreb, including shows on Jiří Valoch, Philip Corner, the Pécsi Műhely group, Rudolf Sikora, Július Koller, Jarosław Kozłowski, and the OHO group, as well as monographs on Gorgona, Jan Steklik, and others.
