Marinella Senatore's 'Piazza Universale/Social Stages' at Queens Museum
Marinella Senatore, a prominent Italian artist born in 1977, is set to open her solo exhibition 'Piazza Universale/Social Stages' at the Queens Museum in New York on April 8, 2017. Curated by Matteo Lucchetti, the show synthesizes her participatory practices developed across Spain, France, Italy, and the United States since 2009. The exhibition centers on democratic participation, exploring individual stories, cultural backgrounds, and social structures through drawing, installation, photography, video, painting, and sound art. A one-hour performance titled 'Protest Forms: Memory and Celebration: Part II' will inaugurate the show, featuring a Caribbean band, an LGBTQ symphony orchestra, and other groups to honor past and present struggles of New York communities. The soundtrack, 'Queens Anthem,' was composed by Emilio Branda through an open call that gathered 'sonic memories' and protest songs from minority neighborhoods. The exhibition runs from April 9 to July 30, 2017, at the Queens Museum in Flushing Meadows Corona Park.
