Marine Hugonnier's Travel Posters exhibition at Ingleby Gallery explores image circulation and tourist gaze

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Marine Hugonnier's 'Travel Posters' exhibition at Ingleby Gallery in Edinburgh took place from 1 February to 28 March 2020. The artist showcased c-prints of the renowned 1971–72 Pan Am advertising campaigns by Ivan Chermayeff and Tom Geismar, framed in custom Perspex boxes. With a background in anthropology and philosophy, Hugonnier explores representation's political aspects. Between 27 and 29 November 2019, she discovered 12 seemingly identical digital versions of the posters, examining variations in hue, tone, and resolution. The exhibition features three works from Hawaii, three from South America, and five from Argentina, with titles reflecting their digital origins. Originally a Meeting House for the Glasites, the gallery has been in three buildings over 22 years, boasting interiors that can overshadow the art. Chermayeff and Geismar's original posters utilized Magnum photographs to craft compelling travel imagery devoid of recognizable landmarks or typical advertising elements. Hugonnier's research highlights how digital dissemination transforms images while deepening the appreciation for the original designs' nostalgic allure.
