Marina Abramović Unveils Inflatable Alien Landscape at New York's Balloon Museum

Marina Abramović, the renowned performance artist, has created her first inflatable art installation, titled 'Snowy/Windy/Spring on Planet Z', now on view at the newly opened Balloon Museum in New York. The museum, which bills itself as 'the first permanent home for inflatable art', opened earlier this month. Abramović described the work as unlike anything she has done before, stating, 'I've never done anything like this in my life. But if you give me an assignment then I'll try to see what I can do with it.' The installation features oversized inflatable blades of grass and papery snowflakes that blow through a glowing white gallery space, creating an immersive, alien landscape. Visitors navigate a curving path that obscures the room's full extent, making the journey feel longer than expected. Abramović, speaking via Zoom from her Manhattan apartment, said she began researching balloon art for the project. The installation marks a significant departure for the artist, known for her physically demanding and often painful performances, and represents a new direction in her practice. The Balloon Museum's permanent home in New York adds to the growing trend of immersive, inflatable art experiences, which have gained popularity in recent years.
