Marina Abramović to Perform Seven Deaths Opera at Munich Opera House in 2020
Marina Abramović will debut her opera Seven Deaths at the Munich Opera House in 2020, a theatrical reinterpretation of her long-delayed film project inspired by Maria Callas. The original film, conceived in 2014, would have featured seven directors including Roman Polanski and Alejandro González Iñárritu, but was abandoned in 2015 due to budget issues and director defections. Abramović now directs and performs the work herself, with a script adapted by Norwegian writer Petter Skavlan and costumes by Italian designer Riccardo Tisci, recently appointed creative director of Burberry. The performance will be filmed and projected live. A London tour at Covent Garden is planned. This follows Abramović's recent cancellation of a permanent MAI building in New York, designed by Rem Koolhaas, due to costs exceeding $30 million.
