Marina Abramović's 'The Cleaner' Retrospective at Moderna Museet

The Moderna Museet in Stockholm opens 2017 with a major retrospective of Marina Abramović, titled 'The Cleaner.' Curated by Lena Essling, it is the first large European retrospective of the artist, who was born in Belgrade in 1946. The exhibition features over 120 works, including early paintings and paper works shown for the first time, as well as documentation of performances from the 1970s onward, many created with her former partner Ulay (1976–1988). The title references her 1990s performance 'Cleaning the Mirror' at the Guggenheim in New York. The show runs until May 21, 2017, and focuses on her artistic career, avoiding the controversies that surrounded her in 2016, including disputes over her childhood comments, statements on Australian Aborigines, and a lawsuit with Ulay.
