Marina Abramović's Spiritual Journey to Brazil Hits Italian Theaters

other · 2026-05-05

Marina Abramović returns to the big screen with "The Space in Between. Marina Abramović and Brazil" (2016), directed by Marco Del Fiol. Following the success of "The Artist is Present" (2012), which documented her three-month performance at MoMA in New York, this feature film follows the artist on a pilgrimage to Brazil. She explores vibrant religious communities, participating in purification ceremonies and psychedelic trips, reflecting on the parallels between performance art and sacred rituals. The journey is also a healing process after a significant romantic breakup; Abramović remarked, "Maria Callas died of a broken heart, I didn't want that to happen to me." The film will be screened in Italian theaters exclusively on October 3, 4, and 5, distributed by Nexo Digital and I Wonder Pictures in collaboration with Unipol Biografilm Collection.
