Marina Abramović's MoMA Retrospective Recreates Past Performances with Actors
The Museum of Modern Art in New York hosted a retrospective of Marina Abramović from March 13 to May 31, 2010, showcasing live performers who reenacted her significant past works. This exhibition highlighted pieces from her collaboration with Ulay (Uwe Laysiepen) during the 1970s and 1980s, including Imponderabilia (1977), Relation in Time (1977), and Point of Contact (1980). Documenting her 40-year artistic journey, it ranged from early sound installations in Belgrade to immersive experiences. A notable addition was The Artist is Present, where Abramović silently engaged with visitors throughout the exhibition. The review remarked on visitors' inappropriate reactions to the reenactments, differing from the original performances' intensity. Additionally, the show included Balkan Baroque (1997) and House With an Ocean View (2002). The Marina Abramović Institute for the Preservation of Performance Art, set to open in 2012 in Hudson, N.Y., was founded to tackle preservation issues.
