Marina Abramović's Balkan Erotic Epic Opens at Gropius Bau in Berlin
Marina Abramović is showcasing her first significant exhibition in Berlin since the 1990s, titled 'Balkan Erotic Epic. The Exhibition', at Gropius Bau, which will be open until August 23, 2026. This exhibition contrasts historical pieces with contemporary video installations, examining the relationship between the body, political structures, and Balkan myths. Central themes encompass rituals, the history of the Balkans, and the connection between eroticism and mortality. The title piece, initiated in 2005, includes videos filmed in Serbia featuring adult film performers. The exhibition begins with 'Tito's Funeral' (2025) and features 'Kafana' (2025). A 6th-century BCE figurine from North Macedonia is also exhibited. Live performances include 'Nude with Skeleton' (2002/2026), curated by Agnes Gryczkowska and Jenny Schlenzka.
